The brief
What it had to do
The problem
A jewellery counter sells many near-identical pieces. The owner needed to know exactly which piece sold, came back or went missing, bill quickly with a barcode scanner, and never lose a day's records to a power cut.
What we built
A Windows desktop console covering barcode billing, a barcode on every individual piece, label printing, stock receiving, adjustments and full physical counts, editable invoices, returns, customers and profit reports, all stored on the shop computer with automatic backups.
What changed
Every piece carries its own barcode, so a sale, a return or a gap at stock count is traced to that exact piece, and the counter keeps billing with the internet switched off.

Billing at the counter
- Plug-and-play USB barcode scanner that works from anywhere in the app
- Scanning a label jumps straight to a new sale and adds that exact piece
- Scanning the same sticker twice is refused
- Search by name, SKU or category when a piece has no label
- Discount in rupees or percent, with GST worked out on the bill
- Cash, UPI, card or split payments
- Optional customer name, phone and delivery address, remembered for next time
- Finish a sale with Enter, then print an 80 mm receipt or an A4 tax invoice
A barcode on every piece
- Each physical piece gets its own Code 128 barcode, not one per design
- Codes carry a check digit and are checked unique across the whole shop
- Barcodes are drawn as vector graphics, so printed labels scan cleanly
- A Pieces tab shows every piece of a product with its status and history
Label printing
- Pieces that have never been labelled are flagged and queued in one click
- 38 × 25 mm, 50 × 25 mm or a custom label size
- Choose what prints: product name, price, barcode, SKU, category and shop name
- Columns, gaps and margins, with a live preview of the sheet
- Silent printing, with a separate printer for labels, receipts and invoices
Stock and inventory
- Stock list with units on hand and value at cost
- Stock in: receiving goods creates new pieces, each ready for its label
- Adjustments with reason codes: damaged, lost or stolen, customer returned, count correction
- Full-screen physical count that names each missing piece by its barcode
- Low-stock alerts with reorder levels
- Every stock movement logged with a timestamp
Sales, edits and returns
- Sales history filtered by date, payment status and payment method
- Reopen and edit a finished sale while keeping the same invoice number
- Every amendment is recorded and printed at the foot of the invoice
- Returns find the original invoice from a scan of the returned piece
- Refund by cash, UPI, card or store credit, and put the piece back in stock
Products and customers
- Catalogue in grid or table view, with categories and stock status
- Details such as purity, weight and making charge, with a live margin
- Product photos stored with each item
- Customers with total spent, visits, average bill and a purchase timeline
Reports
- Revenue, cost of goods, gross profit and margin, compared with the previous period
- Sales over time and revenue by category
- Best and worst performers
- CSV export and print to PDF
Safe, offline and fast to use
- Runs fully offline and never sends data anywhere
- Saves every change as it happens, with writes that survive a power cut
- Automatic backups at startup, every hour and on exit, keeping the last 30
- Restores itself from the newest backup if the data file is ever damaged
- Export a full copy to a pen drive, and restore it on a new computer
